Grey Wolf (Timber Wolf)

Canis lupus

The pack here at Beardsley arrived in the summer of 1998 from a breeding facility in South Dakota. We have one male Apache (the black one) and one female Cheyenne. You may sometimes see keepers in with the wolves. They are conditioning/target training the wolves in order to make check-ups and routine health procedures less stressful for the animals.

Description:
Large canines with combinations or variations of grey, black, white, or light brown fur, standing 26" to 35" at the shoulders and weighing 60 to 140 pounds.

Range:
Alaska, southern Canada, northern west and Midwest States (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming). A smaller subspecies is found in Mexico. Historically wolves were found in all 50 US States, all of Canada and most of Mexico.

Diet:
As a pack: moose, caribou, elk, deer, mountain sheep and beaver, a single wolf will prey on rabbit, pheasant and other small animals.

Lifespan:
10 - 16 years in the wild, 20 years in captivity.

Status:
Endangered or threatened depending on geographical area. In the late1960's the population was reduced from 250,000 in the contiguous States to about 450.
